Heirloom Strawberry Seeds

Strawberries are everybody’s favorite and today you might find people growing strawberry plants in their own garden rather than choosing to buy them from the departmental store.

The reason – The numerous varieties that they get! Growing heirloom strawberry plants from heirloom strawberry seeds can be extremely difficult, but much rewarding as well.

Although, many think that strawberries are just one single variety, yet very few have noticed that strawberries like any other fruits or vegetables have different varieties and require different environments to grow.

If you wish to grow strawberry plants from strawberry seeds, then selecting the seeds in terms of its yield, quality and variety is extremely important.

Finding the seeds might be a bit difficult since you won’t get them from your normal departmental store, but you need to find your local nursery or a fellow hobbyist, who can exchange strawberry seeds and other heirloom vegetable seeds with you. Your local nursery might have heirloom seeds catalog, from where you can select the variety you need and the quality that you wanted.

Although, new strawberry varieties are constantly being released and bred, yet here is a list of strawberry types that you might want to consider for your garden:

June Harvest strawberry

It does not matter how many types of strawberry varieties you go through most of them will probably consist of more June harvesting strawberries than any other.

June bearing strawberries are extremely popular, are common among people and generally produce large numbers. These strawberries produced their fruits for a period of more than three weeks on average. Since harvesting in the case of these strawberries is done in June, it has been named after it. However, these strawberries are again classified into – the late-season, midseason and early-season.

If you could choose a strawberry plant variety that can be harvested during different parts of the season, you can enjoy fresh strawberries all throughout the month of June.

Everbearing strawberry

Although the name might give you thoughts that they produce strawberries throughout the year, they don’t. They generally produce two harvests every year – one in the spring season and the other during the late summer.

If environmental conditions are ideal, then you might be lucky to get three harvests in a year. Unlike June bearing strawberries, Everbearing strawberries produce very little yield, as most of its energy is concentrated towards producing multiple harvest. These strawberries are generally planted in places where space is limited.

Neutral Day strawberry

These strawberries are extremely unique, and produce high yields, more than June bearing strawberries. Neutral Day strawberries produce high yields during its first year and produce strawberries whenever the temperature is between 36 and 80 degrees. However, a single downside is that they produce smaller strawberries than its counterparts.

Nothing can be more exciting than seeing your own fresh and delicious strawberries growing in your own garden. Apart from its scenic beauty, it also is a romantic atmosphere for many who would love to give their home a dramatic theme.
